Car Care News: October: Five safety tips for your vehicle's braking system

Article-new-ds-photo-getty-article-78-200-86534124_xs
Families penciling road maps and compiling an itinerary for summer travel should add one additional item to the list—brake inspection.

Your vehicle’s brake system is a key safety component and prone to problems caused by harsh summer conditions.  Heat is the main culprit, especially for vehicles loaded down with travelers and gear.

“You don’t want to get stranded in the desert or on a remote mountain side.” said Tony Molla, vice president of communications at the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.  “Drivers should always get their brakes inspected before going on vacation.”

The following five tips will help you ride safely into your summer travels.

1. Take it easy in extreme conditions.

For instance, extensive braking on steep mountain grades causes heat build-up in brake pads and prevents them from working properly.

“Heat build-up makes the braking system less effective,” Molla said. “It could get to the point where the brakes don’t work at all.”

That is especially true when brake pads are worn. They do not have enough composite material to dissipate heat quickly, and the brake system can fail.

2. Are your brakes “spongy”?  Could be a sign there is air in the brake line or perhaps a leak.

Brake lines are the backbone of the hydraulic system that stops your vehicle when you push the pedal.  Any “play” indicates a problem with the braking system.

“If you feel sponginess in the pedal it could be because your rubber brake lines are going bad,” said Tim Beachboard, owner of FedHill Brake Line, a Massachusetts-based company.

Moisture in brake lines can cause brake systems to fail and fluid to go bad.

“It should look light, like light beer or lager,” Beachboard said. “If it’s dark, like Guinness stout, then it’s time to replace it.”

3. Listen for grinding or scraping sounds when you apply the brakes.

“If you hear any kind of grinding noise during braking, pull over and park your car immediately,” ASE’s Molla said. “Otherwise you could cause expensive damage.”

Stop-and-go driving and mountain driving tend to wear down brakes faster than freeway driving. Other factors include how hard you apply brakes, driving conditions and types of materials used in brake pads.

4. According to Molla, drivers should use replacement pads that meet manufacturer’s recommendations. Pads are designed of composite materials including metal fibers, rubber compounds, silicates and resins. How and where you drive influences the kinds of pads best suited to your driving habits.

Trucks pulling trailers usually require stiffer, larger pads than passenger vehicles. Brake pads for highway driving need to absorb more heat but generally wear out faster.

Ask your service advisor to make some recommendations based on your driving habits and locations.

5. Get your vehicle brakes inspected before your road trip.
Your auto technician can check thickness of brake pads, leaky brake lines, brake fluid and wheel rotors.

“Rotors require careful inspection of a trained technician because even slight wear can warrant their replacement and precision tools such as micrometers are needed to measure that wear,” Molla said.

GM to debut new Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra pickups in December

Bilde
General Motors plans to reveal its redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups Dec. 13 in Detroit, officials said Monday.

The highly anticipated trucks are central to GM's profitability in North America. The Silverado 1500, which hasn't been redesigned since 2006, is easily GM's best-selling vehicle in the U.S. at 298,200 units in the first nine months of the year.

The 2014 Silverado and Sierra are expected to hit showrooms at an unspecified time in 2013. The public will get to see the vehicles in person at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

"The bold exterior design of the new Silverado reflects the enhanced capabilities of the truck while features such as jewel-like, projector beam headlamps showcase the careful attention given to every detail," GM said in a statement.

The Silverado has entered the "final validation" phase and "torture testing," the automaker said earlier this month. The pickup competes against Ford's F-150 series and Chrysler's Ram pickup.

The vehicle will start production in 2013 at the company's plants in Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Silao, Mexico.

Silverado marketing manager Tony Truelove said in a recent interview that the new vehicle would balance "performance capability and fuel economy."

"We don't trade off one to get the other. We feel we have a very good overall truck and will continue to improve on that formula for the next generation," Truelove said.

The Mark of a New Generation, Crossed Flags Revealed

2014-culture-news-corvette-mm-1-1_316x209
Today, Chevrolet released an all-new Crossed Flags emblem to announce that a completely redesigned 2014 Corvette is underway. The highly anticipated vehicle will be revealed in Detroit, Michigan, on 1.13.13, adorned with the new Crossed Flags insignia.

The new flags reflect the sweeping redesign of the Next Generation Corvette. GM Vice President of Global Design Ed Welburn describes the emblem as “much more modern, more technical, and more detailed than before.”

No less is expected from the Next Generation Corvette. According to Chevy, this redesign was a purposeful, swift and aggressive departure.

“We set out to build a world-challenging sports car with refinement, efficiency and driver engagement that is second to none,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer. “The result is a truly all-new Corvette.”

For now, vehicle specs and features remain shrouded in mystery. The generation that will change the driving experience forever will be revealed to the world on 1.13.13.

Chevy Silverado earned the Vincentric lowest cost of ownership award for full-size pickups

Spbrc0023-chevy-silverado-stampede-bed-caps
For everyone who owns a Chevy Silverado, you already know that you have the most dependable, longest-lasting full-size truck on the road. Now, we're proud to share the distinction that Silverado has been recognized as having the lowest cost of ownership of any full-size pickup by Vincentric.

Just like a lot goes into making Silverado, a lot goes into calculating the cost of ownership. The Vincentric lowest cost of ownership award takes into consideration the costs of insurance, maintenance, fuel and more. So whether you are buying or selling, you are getting the biggest bang for your buck. Durability and warranty coverage are also considered, which is good for Silverado considering its standard 5-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. That’s 40,000 more miles than Ford offers – which lets you know Chevy is keeping you in the drivers seat for as long as possible. Each of these things means that you save more money over time when you buy a Silverado. And that means a lot.

Now that you’re ready to head to the dealership and pick out your favorite color and style of Silverado, it’s important that you know all of the models that won this title. And guess what? Every single one of the Silverado models, including the 1500, 2500 and 3500, has the lowest cost of ownership of any full-size pickup in its class. The Silverado 2500 and 3500 were also given the 2012 Vincentric Best Fleet Value Award. There are so many choices!

Chevy, GM Seek To Beat The $1.1 Million Raised In 2011 For Breast Cancer

Gm-chevrolet-breast-cancer-fight-2012-582x385
Chevrolet, along with General Motors employees, dealers, and customers, are renewing their commitment to fight breast cancer for 2012. The groups are looking to surpass the nearly $1.1 million raised by the American Cancer Society via Chevy’s nationwide grassroots assistance.

The Bow Tie brand is launching several October events to drum up financial support for the cause, starting with GM’s worldwide headquarters at the Renaissance Center in Detroit being lit with pink bands to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the first time, the Chevy Spark will be present and accounted for: a special “Pink Out” Spark wears a production-spec Techno Pink hue and is decorated with custom pink elements inside and out. Designed to honor breast cancer survivors and supporters, the “Pink Out” Spark will visit community walks throughout October.

In 2011, The Bow Tie brand’s support raised $1,079,633 in contributions to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for the American Cancer Society. The funds go to funding research, wellness, and breast cancer awareness education, as well as support for break cancer patients and their families.

Planned Chevy-sponsored events in October in support of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer:

Chevrolet and GM Employee Walks

All month, General Motors facilities, plants and warehouses across the country will participate in fund-raising walks.

Chevrolet Dealership Walks

Hundreds of dealerships have already signed up to sponsor teams in community walks throughout October with more expected to join. These walks alone accounted for more than half of the money raised in 2011 that went to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Those interested in participating in a Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk in their community can visit www.makingstrideswalk.org.

Chevrolet Certified Service

Customers who bring their vehicle to a Chevy dealer for qualifying services in October can contribute part or all of their rebates and Chevrolet will match them, up to a total of $150,000. A $39.95 oil and filter change, tire rotation and 27-multi-point inspection is $29.95 after the $10 mail-in rebate. The $99.95 (per axle) ACDelco Durastop ceramic brake pads service is $74.95 after the $25 mail-in rebate. For more information, visit mycertifiedservicerebates.com.

Chevrolet Racing

  • A Making Strides Against Breast Cancer-themed pink Camaro SS pace car will appear at selected Chevrolet dealers and GM events throughout October.
  • Chevrolet and Tony Stewart Racing will display a specially wrapped USAC National Midget Car at races at Eldora Speedway in Ohio (Sept. 21-22); Mechanicsburg, Pa. (Sept. 28-29); and the New York State Fair in Syracuse (Oct. 5-7). At those races, representatives from the American Cancer Society will distribute brochures with information on local walks, the importance of early detection and ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
  • In early September, Chevrolet contributed $6,200 to the American Cancer Society – $200 for each of the 31 caution laps during the AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Breast cancer survivors and their families also spent time in the pink Camaro SS pace car with Team Chevy drivers Jamie McMurray and Ron Hornaday, Jr.

Chevrolet Test Drives

Chevrolet will contribute $5 to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for every vehicle test drive at these Southern Women’s Shows: Birmingham, Ala. (Oct. 4-7); Orlando, Fla. (Oct. 11-14); and Jacksonville, Fla. (Oct. 18-21).
