Maintenance tip Monday: High Performance Vehicles
After each race, his crew checks the undercarriage and the steering. They examine the tires. They change the motor oil. Then they lift the car onto stands so its high-performance tires are off the ground to prevent flat spots from developing.
Any high-performance production car should be similarly treated, not only after every event but for seasonal storage as well, advised Tony Molla, a certified ASE technician and vice president of communications for ASE, the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.
“Of course, most owners of high-performance vehicles never see a race track, so their routine maintenance needs are not any different than those of a subcompact,” he said. “Those maintenance needs are spelled out in each vehicle’s owner’s manual.”
Many newer vehicles require 7,500-mile oil changes. High-performance models typically come from the factory filled with synthetic motor and gear oils. These lubricants often provide 15,000-mile service intervals.
A vehicle raced may demand more attention.
“A high-performance vehicle driven hard on a race track will certainly need more routine maintenance than will a similar version of that vehicle used as a daily driver,” Molla said.
“For a vehicle driven hard, certainly frequent oil changes and even brake fluid changes are rather standard procedures. Fast and hard driving tends to heat up both oil and brake fluid excessively,” he added.
According to NADA, the National Auto Dealers Association, owners should have coolant systems checked to verify that proper antifreeze capabilities remain. Most newer vehicles come with lifetime coolant. A local dealer can verify that the coolant in your vehicle is satisfactory for your wintertime low temperatures.
Likewise, said NADA, be sure tire pressure is as specified and tire tread sufficient to provide traction on wet or snowy roads. Check wiper blades too to be sure the rubber blade itself is intact.
A good wash and cleaning inside and out is a good idea too.
If you don’t race your high-performance car yet do drive it aggressively on the freeways and back roads follow the owner’s manual maintenance recommendations under severe conditions,” Molla said.
“Cars are machines,” said the ASE executive, “so the harder you are on them the more likely they are to break. The gentler you are with them and the more you service them, the longer the machine will last.
“My best advice is this, whatever you drive daily: Read the owner’s manual. Learn what it says about the care and maintenance of the vehicle. The problem is, no one does that,” he said. “If still in doubt, call your dealer and ask to talk to the service director.”
Follow these seasonal maintenance tips, however high performance your ride might be:
- Read the vehicle owner’s manual
- Follow the owner’s manual recommended maintenance procedures and change intervals
- If you drive aggressively, heed the manual’s recommendations for “severe” conditions
- If driving in colder climates, have antifreeze capability tested by your dealer
- While there, have the dealer check wiper blades, all interior and exterior lights for proper working order, and for tire wear
- Keep tires properly inflated and have tread depth checked frequently
- If the owner’s manual doesn’t answer your questions, your local dealership service director will be able to

GM and Walt Disney redesign Epcot Center's Test Track attraction
Chevrolet and Disney tapped their best design talent with expertise ranging from industrial and automotive design to architecture and animation. The design collaboration began 18 months ago with a few guiding principles – create an experience that is personal, future-focused and optimistic.
The two teams met regularly throughout the development process in both GM's Design studios in Warren, Mich., and at Test Track in Epcot in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The collaboration allowed for the greatest level of innovation yet ensured the values of both brands were accurately represented in the new attraction, while allowing both teams to learn from each other's expertise.
"At Chevrolet, the diversity of talent on our team allows us to consistently produce sophisticated, refined and detailed design – but we don't typically design through the eyes of a 12-year-old," said Jeff Mylenek, GM Design manager, Global Exhibit and Merchandising Design. "Working with Walt Disney Imagineering, we were inspired to see our brand story from a more youthful perspective and really opened the parameters on how to approach this design challenge."
The result is a unique experience that gives an authentic, inside-the-studio look at the actual automotive design process, while empowering guests themselves to create their own designs, possibly inspiring the next generation of automotive designers.
"The re-imagined Test Track portrays an optimistic view of the future, and reflects the deep collaboration between Disney and Chevrolet on both the design and the overall experience," said Eric Jacobson, senior vice president, Walt Disney Imagineering. "It's a thrilling attraction supported by rich exhibit displays and interactive elements that bring guests directly into the design process – with a few surprises thrown in."
The teams used multiple mediums throughout the re-imagined attraction for storytelling, including:
Visual cues inspired by Chevrolet's expressive vehicle design language throughout the architectural elements in the space as well as in the interactive displays; speed forms and concept vehicle displays, like EN-V and Miray, provide a glimpse into the future of Chevrolet design.
Advanced computer technology – similar to that used by Chevrolet designers every day – powers the guest design experience, while radio frequency technology allows them to take their unique vehicle design with them through the entire ride.
A thrill-ride that provides the test experience where each guest's vehicle design is evaluated.
Social media sharing extends the experience beyond the day at the park.
Test Track Presented by Chevrolet offers Disney guests a three-part experience:
First, guests will have the opportunity to design their own vehicle – car, truck or crossover – with some helpful hints from the Chevrolet designers built into the process. "Designing a successful vehicle requires some careful thought about how to balance capability, efficiency, responsiveness and power – some of the key elements that Chevrolet designers must consider with every new vehicle they imagine," said Mylenek.
Next, they will have the chance to test drive their vehicle design, through the ride, on track surfaces that simulate the actual vehicle validation process that Chevrolet engineers use to ensure every new vehicle meets the highest performance standards. Each guest's vehicle design will be evaluated and scored based on how well their design balanced the core attributes.
Finally, guests have the opportunity to race their vehicle over changing terrain and extreme conditions on a digital driving table, produce and share a TV commercial starring their custom vehicle and pose for action shots in front of their design.

Maintenance Tip Monday: How to keep leather interior looking like new
After all, seats get the most wear and tear – and share of spills – but don’t forget the armrests and door panels. They too get a lot of action from passengers.
Keeping leather interiors like new is not difficult. Many manufacturers make a wide variety of products – from pastes and spray-on products to wipes – to help motorists keep leather vehicle interiors in excellent, long-lasting condition.
According to experts, two considerations affect the kind of car-care product that’s right for the leather interior in your vehicle:
• New interiors or newer interiors showing little soiling can be cleaned and conditioned using a one-step cleaner-conditioner product.
• For older interiors and those scuffed or dirty, use of a single-step leather cleaner followed by a single-step leather conditioner will work best.
Automotive interior leather cleaning and conditioning products use similar components in their formulas, so manufacturer choice should not be difficult.
“In new cars, leather has coatings on them to help protect against moisture spills and wear and tear, but at the microscopic level the leather pores are flexible,” said Mike Pennington, director of Training and Consumer Relations, for car-care products company Meguiar’s.
“When you cleaning leather, you’re wiping clean its protective layer applied by the OEM. Cleaning clears away oils, grime and dirt that get onto its surface from our clothes and skin. Leather cleaners are typically gentler for this purpose than are other types of all-purpose cleaners or vinyl cleaners.”
Once a cleaner has done its work—be sure to work over armrests and other interior leather items—the conditioner application helps keep the leather’s pores flexible. The right conditioner will not add false color to the original leather and will help keep the leather soft and supple, looking its best.
Pennington advised against using rub-in pastes or colored cleaner-conditioners on premium leather seats having perforations (for heat and A/C). These products can clog these pinpoint pores and discolor. Consult the product’s manufacturer if in question, he said.
Now that the interior is clean, conditioned and protected again, be careful as you enter and leave the vehicle so you keep the leather nice and fresh. Pennington offered these “Not to Do” tips:
- Be alert to sharp objects in rear pants pockets or items on belts that can scratch or even puncture leather
- When loading a SUV, lay down a towel or tarp before stowing items, such as bicycles having sharp objects that might otherwise scar or scratch the leather
- Keep leather wipes in the vehicle for quick spot removal from coffee and food spills
- Do not wear soiled clothes while driving, which can transfer grime into leather seats
- Wait until your destination before lathering arms, legs and torso with sun screen
